What are PRP and PRP therapy? (in short with only the most relevant details)
PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma or Protein Rich Plasma.
Blood contains many types of cells suspended in a liquid called plasma. Plasma is a soup of various proteins and growth factors. As you may remember from the high school chemistry class that when a solid-liquid mixture is spun at high speed, it separates into its components. Similarly, PRP is obtained by processing a few millilitres of your blood in a machine called the centrifugation machine.
PRP contains several different growth factors and other cytokines that can stimulate healing of soft tissue and joints when injected into them. After the PRP is prepared, it is transferred to syringes with fine needles.
PRP Therapy comprises of monthly PRP injections at the problem site to promote healing or in cosmetology for issue tightening. PRP therapy is done in multiple sessions. The number of courses required depends on the specific condition and type of skin.
PRP therapy is especially helpful in aesthetic medicine where it is mainly used for hair regrowth in androgenic alopecia and facial rejuvenation.
How is PRP procedure done?
The first step is to obtain blood and prepare PRP which takes about half an hour.
Next, the treatment area skin is cleaned thoroughly, and you are asked to lay back comfortably on the treatment chair. PRP is then injected into the skin of the area being treated under local anaesthesia. There is no pain.
PRP Therapy for Androgenic Alopecia:
PRP injections are placed at regular intervals in the scalp in areas of hair loss to stimulate hair growth.
PRP Therapy for Facial Rejuvenation:
PRP is injected in the skin of the face to stimulate the formation of collagen. Facial Rejuvenation with PRP injections is popularly called ‘Vampire Face Lift’. The new collagen formation makes the skin tight, smooth and reduces fine wrinkles.
PRP injections are given after anaesthetising the area with topical anaesthetic cream in case of facial treatment. For hair fall treatment PRP injections are placed after numbing the scalp skin with local anaesthetic injections.

Who are best candidates for PRP therapy?
An ideal candidate for a PRP therapy is in good physical health, understands the procedure, and has realistic expectations of the outcome. It is best effective in patients with mild laxity and fine wrinkles. You are likely to be pleased with the results if your goal is to smooth wrinkles, improve skin texture or reduce the effects of sun damage
When will I see the results?
The platelet and growth factors in PRP stimulate collagen formation. Collagen formation and collagen maturation take around a month. Results are apparent from 2 to 3 months onwards. PRP therapy requires multiple sessions to generate enough changes in the skin to result in visible tightness and smoothening. Around 6-8 sessions are needed with a monthly gap. Depending upon the laxity of the skin some individuals may need up-to 10 sessions.
Is it Safe ? Are there any risks ?
Our trained team of medical and nursing professionals has performed many procedures. We give utmost importance to patient safety.
PRP in itself is extremely safe because it is prepared from your own blood. There is no risk of reaction or allergy. It has minimal downtime.
PRP injections around eyes and mouth need extra care to avoid injuring delicate structures.
After-Treatment instructions and precautions?
PRP Therapy is an extremely safe treatment with minimal downtime. There is a slight swelling for the first 12 hours. You can apply makeup from the next day onwards. After your treatments, your health care provider may recommend a moisturiser or facial product to enhance and prolong your result. You’ll need to avoid the sun for several months since your healing skin will be susceptible to tanning and hyperpigmentation. Proper use of sunscreen and following “Aftercare instructions” given to you at the time of treatment is very important.
