PRP for Hair Loss. Does it actually work?

Overview of PRP Therapy

PRP Therapy for Hair loss is a novel technique to provide hair roots with the much-needed growth factors and prevent premature hair fall. It is useful in both temporary and permanent hair loss.

We use PRP therapy extensively after Hair Transplant procedure to provide growth factors to the newly transplanted growing hair.

PRP therapy for the face is glamorously called ‘Vampire Face Lift’. It is an aesthetic procedure to form new collagen and tighten the ageing skin in a natural way.

PRP is a concentrate of platelet-rich plasma proteins derived from your own blood. It has a high concentration of growth factors and has been used to encourage a brisk healing response across several specialities, in particular dentistry, orthopaedics and dermatology.

PRP contains several different growth factors and other cytokines that can stimulate healing of soft tissue and joints. In cosmetology PRP is mainly used for hair regrowth in androgenic alopecia and for facial rejuvenation.

How is PRP procedure done ?

First, your skin is cleaned thoroughly. Then you are asked to lay back comfortably on the treatment chair.

PRP is prepared from your own blood. Approximately 20ml blood is drawn. It is then centrifuged i.e. spun at a high speed for 10 to 15 minutes. Centrifugation separates the blood into blood cells, and plasma fraction. The plasma is further processed to obtain PRP.

After the PRP is prepared it is transferred to syringes with fine needles. PRP is then injected into the skin of the area being treated under local anaesthesia. There is no pain.

Androgenic Alopecia: PRP injections are placed at regular intervals in the scalp in areas of hair loss in order to stimulate hair growth.

Facial rejuvenation: PRP is injected in the skin of the face to stimulate the formation of collagen. Facial Rejuvenation with PRP injections is popularly called ‘Vampire Face Lift’. The new collagen formation makes the skin tight, smooth and reduces fine wrinkles.

PRP therapy is done in multiple sessions. The number of sessions required will depend on the specific condition and the type of your skin.

What are the benefits of PRP therapy ?

  • PRP stimulates hair growth in hair follicles affected by Androgenic alopecia.
  • PRP softens wrinkles and creates smoother skin texture and tone.
  • PRP stimulates collagen and naturally smoothens and tightens the skin.
  • Helpful in Wound healing.
  • In orthopedic injuries, tendonitis, arthritis and chronic pain.

Who are best candidates for PRP therapy ?

An ideal candidate for a PRP therapy is in good physical health, understands the procedure, and has realistic expectations of the outcome. It is best effective in patients with mild laxity and fine wrinkles. You are likely to be pleased with the results if your goal is to smooth wrinkles, improve skin texture or reduce the effects of sun damage

When will I see the results of PRP therapy for Hair Loss ?

The platelet and growth factors in PRP stimulate collagen formation. Collagen formation and collagen maturation take around a month. Results are appreciable from 2 to 3 months onwards. PRP therapy requires multiple sessions to generate enough changes in the skin to result in visible tightness and smoothening. Around 6-8 sessions are required with a monthly gap. Depending upon the laxity of the skin some individuals may need up-to 10 sessions.

Is it Safe ? Are there any risks ?

Our trained team of medical and nursing professionals has performed many procedures. We give utmost importance to patient safety. The needles used for the procedure are very sharp so care should be taken in the regions near the eyes and the mouth.

PRP in itself is extremely safe because it is prepared from your own blood. there is no risk of reaction or allergy. it has minimal downtime.

How much Pain in PRP therapy ?

Most injections are not painful as they are injected after cooling the skin with cold packs and using vibrator instrument to dull the pain. For pain sensitive individuals PRP injections are given after anaesthetizing the area with topical anaesthetic cream in case of facial treatment. For hair fall treatment PRP injections are placed after anaesthetizing the scalp skin with local anaesthetic injections.

After-Treatment instructions and precautions ?

PRP Therapy is a very safe treatment for hair loss and facial rejuvenation. It has minimal downtime. There is a slight swelling for the first 12 hours. You can apply makeup from the next day onwards. After your treatments, your health care provider may recommend a special moisturizer or facial product to enhance and prolong your result. You’ll need to avoid the sun for several months since your healing skin will be susceptible to tanning and hyperpigmentation. Proper use of sunscreen and following “Aftercare instructions‘given to you at the time of treatment is very important.
