Face Wrinkles (everything you wish you knew)

A wrinkle is a fold or crease, also known as a rhytide, on an otherwise smooth surface of the skin. Skin wrinkles usually occur as a result of ageing processes.

They get exaggerated on smiling, laughing or other expressions of the face and are the first give away sign of ageing. For some, they are pride. For others, they are a problem. Whatever the case may be everyone will get wrinkles on the face sooner or later.

If you are looking to get rid of your wrinkles, this guide will help you do that.

Most common regions of facial wrinkles are

Forehead Lines – are skin creases that run horizontally across the forehead from the hairline to the eyebrows. Most visible when you express surprise.

Frown Lines – are short verticle lines between the eyebrows.

Crows Feet – small radially arranges lines present around the outer corners of the eyes.

Bunny Lines – small lines on the bridge of the nose best visible when you sniff something foul.

Nasolabial Folds – generally known as “smile lines” or “laugh lines”. They are the two folds of skin that extend to the corners of the mouth from either side of the nose.

So, What are wrinkles?

Wrinkles are a break in the normal continuity of skin fibres. The skin is made of collagen and elastin fibres which give support and elasticity to the skin. The elasticity of the skin is the ability to snap back in place when pulled.

There are two types of wrinkles.

  • Dynamic Wrinkles

These are skin creases which appear only when the muscle moves to express an emotion. So a logical solution would be to stop the muscle from moving much this is precisely achieved with Botox® (Botulinum Toxin) anti-wrinkle injection treatment which prevents the muscles from contracting.

  • Static Wrinkles

These are permanent wrinkles that stay even at rest and are exaggerated when the muscle moves to express an emotion. These are treated by a multi-modality approach. Botox anti-wrinkle therapy is instituted to prevent muscle contraction which prevents exaggeration. Fillers injections or Fat Fill Procedure is done to correct volume loss and smooth out the forehead skin.

Ever wondered, Why do I have wrinkles on my face?

Ageing

During the natural process of ageing, the skin gradually loses collagen and elastin fibres which give strength elasticity and tightness to the skin. The skin gradually thins out. The muscle activity is more visible through the skin. When the skin is young, surprise lines are formed only when the muscle contracts. Gradually the lines become fine lines which are present even when the muscle is not moving. Which convert to deep lines.

Other than the natural process of ageing Crows Feet wrinkles may be exacerbated by following factors

\

Sun Exposure

The most critical factor affecting skin is the UV radiation of sunlight. It contributes up to 95% to skin damage. By damaging the skin structures, it increases the effects of ageing. So proper use of Sunscreens and sun protection is a must to prevent wrinkles.

Hereditary

Some people develop wrinkles earlier than others. While some don’t develop lines even at an advanced age. Genetic traits are passed on from parents to their children. Understanding this helps us to start treatment early and delay the signs of ageing.

Muscle Activity

The constant movement of facial muscles along with skin changes of ageing creates wrinkles. Initially, they are dynamic and present only at the time of facial expression, but gradually they become static and are present even at rest.

q

Smoking

Smoking accelerates the natural ageing process by restricting the blood flow to the skin. This increased ageing of the skin and decreased collagen and elastin fibres result in the loose, wrinkled skin.

Skin Care

Improper skin care and pollution damages the skin and makes it dry by losing moisture. Damaged skin quickly develops fine wrinkles seen so commonly on the aged skin.

How to prevent facial wrinkles?

Physically wrinkles are a break in the continuity of fibres in the skin. Once broken they are a little challenging to repair. If preventing wrinkles is vital to you then you should begin prophylactic measures even before the wrinkles appear.

These measures are straightforward to understand. Essentially can be divided into two types.

Firstly we need to take care of the skin.

– Skin Care is a vast topic to discuss. Let us not delve deep into it, but a few basic facts will surely help.

– Avoid direct sunlight at all costs. Always wear sunscreen.

– Do not use harsh soaps on the face. Even milder ones should not be used more than two times a day.

– Stop smoking or vaping.

– Should get at least 6-8 hours sleep (Beauty sleep)

– Be sceptical of all home remedies doing rounds on gossip channels and beauty magazines. They will inevitably distract you away from what is truly important and scientifically proven.

– Never self-medicate. Cosmetic procedures are best done by trained professionals.

Secondly, we need to prevent extra muscle movements.

– Most of the muscle movement is involuntary, i.e. the muscle contracts on its own. Botulinum Toxin or Botox injections are the surest way to stop the muscles from contracting. Relaxing the muscle prevents wrinkle formation in the first place.

How to get rid of Facial Wrinkles?

We have got some great news and some good advice.

But before that, there is one crucial fact to remember.

Permanent wrinkles rarely ever occur in isolation. They are usually accompanied by other wrinkles on the face. And like all wrinkles, they are a break in the continuity of skin fibres.

Now, there are no shortcuts to success. Most of the home remedies to remove crows feet wrinkles are a waste of time. The best thing to do would have been to prevent wrinkles in the first place.

If you have permanent lines, let us give you some good advice about things that actually work and show results now rather than in some imaginary future.

The great news is that there is a way to stop the muscle from contracting. Botulinum toxin injections like Botox® achieve muscle relaxation. Doctors have perfected the art of muscle relaxation so much that they can target a specific region at a time and remove wrinkles without the rest of the face. Botox injections are all the rage right now. They are safe and effective and are an essential part of the prevention strategy.

Dermal Fillers and Fat Fill

Unfortunately, the deeply etched lines do not go away even after relaxing the forehead muscle. As such they are break inside the skin. Different cosmetic procedures help to make them less noticeable. The best technique that gives immediate results is by using Filler injections.

Fat Fill is another technique where unwanted fat from other areas of the body is taken and injected in the forehead to smoothen out wrinkles.
